The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) introduced a new biometric identity verification system to strengthen the security around social grant payments and mitigate the risk of fraud.
Originally introduced last year, the biometric verification system is now compulsory for applications from the 7th June 2025.

- Updating Your Mobile Number: If you need to change the phone number linked to your SRD grant, you’ll need to complete a biometric verification first.
- Potential Identity Theft: SASSA’s security system might flag your application for verification if there’s a chance of identity theft (either you being a victim or someone misusing your information). Biometric verification helps confirm your identity and protect your grant access.
What To Expect During Sassa Verification
To complete the biometric verification, the applicant must have a smartphone or computer with a high-quality camera, a stable internet connection, and a well-lit environment.
While the specifics of the biometric verification process are confidential for security reasons, SASSA assures you’ll receive clear instructions when using the SRD system. This ensures a smooth and secure verification process for everyone.
These individuals receive two SMS messages, with the second containing a link for facial recognition verification. The link remains valid for only 72 hours, raising concerns for those without immediate access to smartphones or internet connectivity.
What Happens If Clients Do Not Complete the Verification?
Sassa originally introduced the verification system in July last year. Now the agency has confirmed that from 7th June 2025 the verification process will be compulsory.
