2026 Applications For Nursing Courses Now Open

The demand for qualified healthcare professionals is on the rise, and a nursing degree can lead to a fulfilling and rewarding career. Nursing applications are open for the 2026 academic year.

In South Africa, there are three main types of nursing qualifications you can pursue:

  1. Senior Certificate in Nursing: Requires an APS of 16 points at the end of Matric, with at least 40% in English or a home language and 50% in Life Science or Biology.
  2. Diploma in Nursing: Requires passing grades in Mathematics, English, a Home Language, Life Orientation, and Life Science in Matric.
  3. Bachelor of Science in Nursing: A four-year degree requiring passes in Mathematics, English, a First/Home Language, Life Orientation, and Life Science in Matric.

Nursing Colleges and Their Application Dates

Several nursing colleges across South Africa have opened their applications for the 2026 academic year. Here’s a rundown of key dates and programmes offered:

OPEN NOW FOR 2026 APPLICATIONS

Mpilo Royal College applications are open now.

Ukwazi School of Nursing: Applications are open and will close on 30 June 2025. Programs offered include the Higher Certificate in Nursing and Diploma in Nursing.

Western Cape College of Nursing: Applications open on the 5th May 2025.

Free State School of Nursing: Applications are open and will close on 1 August. Programmes include a Diploma in Nursing, Advanced Diploma in Midwifery, and Higher Certificate in Auxiliary Nursing.

NOT YET OPEN

KZN College of Nursing: Applications open on 1 August. Programs include the National Diploma of Nursing.

Gauteng College of Nursing: Application dates are yet to be confirmed.

Private Nursing Colleges and Hospitals

In addition to public colleges, private institutions also offer nursing courses. Notable private colleges include Netcare, Mediclinic, Amplats Medical Services, Life College and Healthnicon

Additionally, many hospitals across South Africa offer nursing programs. It’s beneficial to contact your nearest hospital to inquire about available nursing courses.

University Nursing Courses

Many universities in South Africa offer nursing courses, and applications for the 2026 academic year are now open at several institutions. Here are some universities currently accepting applications

Other universities such as Unisa, Walter Sisulu University, and University of Fort Hare will open their applications soon.

Next Steps After Your Qualification

Once you obtain your nursing qualification, you are required to complete a year of mandatory community service and register with the South African Nursing Council, which includes passing an examination. There are three types of nurses you can become:

  1. Registered Nurses or Nursing Sisters supervise other nurses and perform nursing duties.
  2. Enrolled Nurses: Provide limited nursing care.
  3. Enrolled Nursing Auxiliaries: Perform basic procedures and patient care.

To be accepted into a nursing programme, there are a number of requirements you will need to meet. Nursing requirements and the programme length will vary depending on the programme and higher education institution you are applying to.
